What is psychotherapy?
According to the American Psychiatric Association, psychotherapy is a type of treatment that can help individuals experiencing a wide array of mental health conditions and the emotional challenges of everyday life.
It can help eliminate or control troubling symptoms so a person can function better and can increase well-being and healing. Problems helped by psychotherapy include difficulties in coping with daily life, the impact of trauma, medical illness or loss — like the death of a loved one — and specific mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety.
Who can benefit from therapy?
There are several types of psychotherapy and some types may work better with certain problems or issues. Psychotherapy may be used in combination with medication or other therapies. Together you and your therapist will decide on the right approach for you.
Struggling with immigration, adaptation or identity
Facing relationship or family conflict
Coping with grief, loss or trauma
Managing anger, stress or burnout
Seeking personal growth and self-understanding
Why therapy matters for immigrants
Immigration is one of life's biggest transitions. Leaving your homeland, rebuilding a career, raising children in a new culture — these experiences deserve care and attention. Therapy designed for immigrants addresses acculturation stress, isolation, identity, and family dynamics in a culturally sensitive way.
